Exploring Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville: History, 5K Run, and Cemetery History Tour
October 27, 2025 | amandasearlerealtor
If you’re looking for a peaceful spot in Jacksonville that blends history, nature, and a friendly vibe, let me introduce you to Evergreen Cemetery — one of my favorite local gems. My husband, Mark, and I have made it a habit over many years to go for a run through its shady lanes. We treat it almost like a park and often see others enjoying it the same way.
A little history & why it matters
Evergreen Cemetery was founded on September 28, 1880 when a group of civic-minded men purchased roughly 200 acres north of Jacksonville to serve as a more spacious, dignified burial ground. Its first burial took place in April 1881. Over time, this 167-acre (and counting) site became the final resting place for everyday Jacksonvillians and many of the city’s prominent leaders. Winding under live oaks and along gentle curving lanes, Evergreen captures the “rural cemetery” movement of the 19th century — part park, part memorial ground.
Why we love running here
- The tree canopy is generous and beautiful, making our Saturday morning runs feel relaxing and rejuvenating.
- The grounds are quiet and park-like (even though it’s a cemetery), offering a contemplative atmosphere that anyone can definitely benefits from.
- Combo of nature + history gives you something to reflect on — whether you’re reflecting on your week or just enjoying a morning moment.
- Bonus: the cemetery hosts fairly regular runs and community events (more on that below), so you’re often in good company.
Events worth marking
- The annual “Pumpkin Run” 5K and 10-mile hosted at Evergreen offers a fun, festive fall run course lined with pumpkins and costumes.
- Coming up: a history-tour event on November 2 (or around that date via Jacksonville History Center) that gives guided tours of the grounds — perfect for those curious about local landmarks and heritage.
A Halloween-twist (because October 31 is this Friday!)
Since Halloween is this coming Friday, it feels only right to mention that Evergreen has its share of historic gravestones and local folklore with a slight spooky edge (in the best possible way). Walking the lanes in autumn light, you feel the hush, the leaf-covered ground, the gentle reminders of past lives. It’s the perfect time to tie together a run, a reflective stroll, or even a family outing that’s both respectful and fun.
Why locals should pay attention
- Evergreen Cemetery is a local landmark: rich in history, embedded in Jacksonville’s evolution, with plenty of stories to draw from (old maps, notable graves, railroad access in the 1880s).
- For real estate pros like me (you know I love the details!), this kind of place adds character to the neighborhood, especially when talking about northeast Jacksonville or the larger “northside” context. It demonstrates that value tree canopy, historic continuity, and neighborhood green space.
