Looking for the best date night ideas in Jacksonville Florida? You have more choices than you might think. Jacksonville is one of those cities where date night can look completely different depending on which direction you drive.
You can watch the sunset over the St. Johns River, have dinner in a historic neighborhood, walk along the beach, explore an art museum, catch a show, or spend an evening playing old-school arcade games. Better yet, you do not have to spend a fortune to have a great night together.
As a Jacksonville local, I think some of the best dates are the ones that take advantage of what makes our city different. We have the river, beaches, historic neighborhoods, parks, arts, restaurants, and plenty of places where you can turn dinner into an entire evening.
So, instead of simply making another restaurant reservation, try one of these Jacksonville date night ideas.
1. Explore Riverside and Avondale
If you want a date where you can park the car and spend some time exploring, Riverside and Avondale are two of my favorite choices.
Start around Five Points, where you can browse local shops before grabbing a drink or dinner. Another option is to head toward the Shoppes of Avondale, where restaurants and local businesses are surrounded by one of Jacksonville’s prettiest historic neighborhoods.
You can also stop at Memorial Park before dinner and walk along the St. Johns River. It is especially pretty around sunset.
For a daytime Saturday date, start at the Riverside Arts Market. It runs under the Fuller Warren Bridge and combines local vendors, artists, food, music, and river views. From there, you can easily continue into Riverside or Five Points.
This is also a great date for anyone who loves architecture. Riverside and Avondale are National Register historic districts, so simply walking or driving through the neighborhoods can be part of the experience.
2. Visit the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
You do not have to be an art expert to enjoy a date at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens.
Located along the river in Riverside, the museum combines art galleries with historic gardens overlooking the St. Johns River. That combination makes it feel a little more special than simply walking through an indoor museum.
Take your time looking at the exhibits, then head outside to explore the gardens. Afterward, continue your date with dinner or drinks in Riverside, Five Points, or Avondale.
This is one of my favorite Jacksonville date ideas because it gives you something to talk about while you are together. Instead of sitting across a table trying to make conversation all evening, you are actually experiencing something together.
3. Plan a Sunset Beach Date
Sometimes the simplest dates are the best ones.
Pick up dinner or snacks and head toward Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, or Atlantic Beach before sunset. Walk along the sand, sit and talk, or make an entire evening out of exploring the beach communities.
For more activity, walk around Beaches Town Center near Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach. You can have dinner, get dessert, stop for a drink, and walk around without constantly getting back into the car.
During cooler months, bring a blanket or sweatshirts and stay after sunset. During the summer, however, you may want to plan your walk later in the evening after the temperature drops.
Best of all, a beach walk is free, making this one of the easiest inexpensive date night ideas in Jacksonville.
4. Have a Downtown River Date
The St. Johns River is one of Jacksonville’s best features, yet locals sometimes forget to use it.
For a different kind of date night, spend an evening Downtown and along the river.
Walk part of the Riverwalk, stop near Friendship Fountain, or plan your evening around dinner overlooking the water. Jacksonville’s bridges and Downtown skyline become especially pretty after dark.
You can also check the St. Johns River Taxi schedule and see whether a ride on the river fits into your plans. Special cruises and events are offered at different times during the year, so check the current schedule before heading out.
A river date is especially good when you want something that feels like you are visiting another city without actually leaving Jacksonville.
5. Make It a Game Night
Not every romantic date needs candles and white tablecloths.
Sometimes a little competition makes date night much more fun.
Try an arcade bar such as Keg & Coin in Riverside, go bowling, play miniature golf, or look for trivia at a local brewery or restaurant.
You could even create your own competition. Give yourselves a budget and see who can find the strangest item at an antique or vintage shop. Pick three restaurants you have never visited and randomly choose one. Or order something for each other instead of choosing your own meals.
The point is to do something instead of automatically falling back on dinner and drinks.
6. Dress Up for a Romantic Jacksonville Dinner
Of course, sometimes you actually want the classic date night.
Jacksonville has plenty of restaurants that work well for anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, or simply an excuse to dress up.
San Marco, Avondale, Riverside, Downtown, and the Beaches all have excellent options. Instead of choosing a restaurant based only on the menu, think about what you can do before or afterward.
For example, have dinner in San Marco and walk around San Marco Square. Choose Riverside and stop at Memorial Park before your reservation. At the Beaches, have dinner followed by a walk near the ocean.
Adding a second stop makes a regular dinner feel much more like an actual date.
7. Catch a Show, Concert, or Sporting Event
Jacksonville’s event calendar can do most of your date-night planning for you.
Look for concerts, comedy shows, live theater, Jacksonville Jaguars games, Jumbo Shrimp baseball games, Jacksonville Icemen hockey games, and special performances happening around town.
The Florida Theatre is also worth watching for concerts, comedians, classic films, and other performances throughout the year.
The nice thing about an event date is that you can adjust it to your budget. A major concert can become a special occasion, while a minor league baseball game can make an easy, casual date.
Before buying tickets, check what else is happening nearby. Dinner before the event or dessert afterward turns a two-hour activity into a complete evening.
8. Plan a Springfield Date Night
If you like historic homes, beautiful architecture, and neighborhoods with character, spend an evening in Springfield Historic District.
Start with a walk or drive through the neighborhood and check out the architecture. Springfield has everything from grand historic homes to smaller bungalows, along with front porches, mature trees, and some of Jacksonville’s most interesting residential streets.
Then make dinner the main event. Othello is a great choice for a more intimate date night, while The District offers a unique setting that feels a little different from a typical Jacksonville restaurant. Reservations are recommended for both, especially for a Friday or Saturday date night, so plan ahead rather than expecting to walk in.
You can also make a full evening of it by stopping for a drink before or after dinner or checking to see if there is a neighborhood event happening that night.
Springfield gives you a completely different date-night experience from the Beaches, Riverside, or Town Center. It feels more neighborhood-oriented and historic, which makes it a good choice when you want dinner somewhere that feels distinctly Jacksonville.
9. Create a Progressive Dinner
Can’t decide where to eat? Don’t.
Instead, choose a neighborhood and create a progressive dinner.
Have a drink or appetizer at the first restaurant, your main course somewhere else, and dessert at a third location.
This works particularly well in areas where several restaurants are close together, including Five Points, Avondale, San Marco, and Beaches Town Center.
You can make it even more interesting by taking turns choosing each stop.
A progressive dinner also gives you a chance to discover several Jacksonville restaurants in one evening rather than spending the entire date at one table.
10. Try an Outdoor Adventure Date
If sitting through a long dinner is not really your thing, take advantage of Northeast Florida’s outdoor spaces.
Go kayaking, rent bikes, explore a park, walk a nature trail, or spend an afternoon at the beach.
For something especially Jacksonville, explore the parks and preserves around the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve area. You can also head toward Big Talbot Island for a completely different coastal landscape than you will find at Jacksonville Beach.
During the warmer months, plan outdoor dates for the morning or closer to sunset. Jacksonville heat and humidity can turn a romantic afternoon hike into something considerably less romantic.
11. Take a Tuk Tuk Tour Around Jacksonville
For a date night that feels a little more like an adventure, book a ride with Tuk’n Ride and explore Jacksonville by tuk tuk.
This is especially fun if you have lived in Jacksonville for years but rarely experience the city like a visitor. Depending on the tour or route you choose, you can ride through some of Jacksonville’s most interesting neighborhoods and entertainment areas while someone else handles the driving.
Make it part of a bigger date by pairing your tuk tuk ride with dinner, drinks, or dessert. It also works well for a birthday, anniversary, double date, or one of those nights when you want to do something more memorable than simply going out to eat.
Because tours and availability can vary, book your tuk tuk experience in advance, particularly if you are planning a Friday or Saturday night.
12. Be Tourists in Your Own City
This might be my favorite idea on the list.
Pretend you are visiting Jacksonville for the first time.
Choose a part of town you rarely visit and spend several hours exploring it. Take pictures. Go into a shop you have driven past 100 times. Order something you have never tried. Visit a museum or attraction you keep saying you will visit “one day.”
Jacksonville is enormous, so even people who have lived here for decades can find areas they barely know.
You could make this a regular date and choose a different Jacksonville neighborhood every month.
13. Plan a Cheap Date Night in Jacksonville
A good date does not need to cost $150.
In fact, Jacksonville has plenty of inexpensive options.
Grab coffee and walk through a historic neighborhood. Pack a picnic for Memorial Park. Watch the sunset at the beach. Visit Riverside Arts Market on Saturday. Explore Downtown and the Riverwalk. Find a free community event. Or pick up dessert and take it somewhere with a great view.
The important part is being intentional about spending time together.
Sometimes a $15 date with a little creativity is more memorable than an expensive dinner reservation.
Finding Your Favorite Jacksonville Date Night
The best thing about dating in Jacksonville is the variety.
One weekend can be dinner and cocktails in a historic neighborhood. The next can be bare feet on the beach. After that, you might see a concert Downtown, visit a museum, kayak through one of Northeast Florida’s waterways, or spend an afternoon exploring somewhere you have never been.
If you live here, challenge yourself to stop going to the same places every weekend. Jacksonville has a lot more to explore than most of us realize.
And if you are considering moving to Jacksonville, exploring the city this way can also help you understand the personality of its different neighborhoods. Riverside feels very different from San Marco. Springfield feels different from the Beaches. Avondale feels different from Downtown.
That variety is part of what makes Jacksonville such an interesting place to call home.
